Our manager’s ongoing engagement with Amazon.com on its labour management practices continued into 2020. Last year we reported on progress achieved as the company published its Global Human Rights Principles, which set out policies in areas including health and safety and equal opportunity. In 2020 we particularly focused on how the company was protecting its staff during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Through multiple calls with the company, our manager had detailed discussions on the procedures in place, particularly in the light of media allegations of poor practice. It called for full disclosure of the number of Covid-19 cases, which the company later published.
Our manager also attempted to co-file a shareholder resolution calling for stronger human rights management, on the basis that whilst the publication of the policies was a step forward, it is still lacking in disclosure or implementation. However, the Securities Exchange Commission supported the company in not allowing this onto the meeting agenda.
